So it’s time for new front bumper. I have the LE version on my 1000 and love the look of it but it’s beat to hell around winch area. It was dented and paint flaking when I got it and I added the tabs to front and it bent out there now. I added backer plate to them and mounted them against the main tube where it bolts into frame.

I don’t really want one that sticks way off front and gives room for winch mount. I like my winch on the frame where it is but need stronger setup for recovery hooks mainly. Maybe there’s better option for front recovery hooks than on bumper?

I wouldn’t be opposed to buying new bumper like I have and having it reinforced if that’s possible because it’s best looking setup in my opinion.

But would like to see some options

Thanks

Wide plate on front and matching on back spreads to load out I use these a lot around the house. I stalled my winch single line and had it double lined dragging an Explorer and a Siverado crew across my yard....I WAS STUCK took a rented excavator to get me out.

My bumper bash plate is bent but from rocks. I should have put some ½” UHMW on it but I never did. Plan is to take it off clean it up and straighten it out after Takeover. If I can’t I’ll buy a new one. The “thin” steel in the bumper was harder to drill than the ¼” flatbar used for the plates...It’s probably stronger than any of the “fabbed” bumpers you can buy aftermarket and it’s been crash tested, not a joke, so there’s been a lot of effort put into the design for strength.

The bend above the fairlead in this is from a tree that I was trying to winch up to use for a Jack I shouldn’t have but it was all I had where I was at and the winch line snapped before I could get a chain through the shackle to hold it up. The limb under neath tried to spear @snuffnwhisky leg while we were testing the lower spring rate springs on the Fox shocks.

I know when I drilled for my tabs it was rough so I know it’s good metal but it bends easy for some reason. My tabs are mounted on outside of main bar and when tabs were used it buckled the outside and bent in the metal on other side of main bar. Guess need bigger plates and maybe somehow tie them into the main bar. Guess new LE bumper and some reinforcements might be my best option.

Thanks for reply

Here’s how mine is bent. Outside is pulled out and inside is pushed back in from twisting. So I need plate that spreads to both sides of that main bar in front of bumper but how do I put backer plate there behind bumper?

No I used one at a time because I thought if they were tied together they would pull inward due to the tension. Figured straight was best not to damage bumper but could be wrong

Look carefully you can see the backplate. It matches the front. I guess you could form one that goes behind the fairlead hole if you had the tools or was patient enough with a grinder and welder that would tie them together. Might do that myself once I get it straight or buy another.

Thought about getting soft shackle long enough to go behind bumper and mount to frame and having it come out front. Think that would work as a better recovery point?

Hey guys Been thinking of getting a new number for my 2018 1000 LE. Nothing wrong with the one I have just think it’s a bit lite I WM in the woods and fields with my bike. I duck hunt and water is almost always an at knee plus deep. Been looking at the tough country deluxe number Amy one had any experience with this monster. I really like having the winch up higher and out of the water. Any draw backs to this. Want all input I am a newbie. Lol. Thanks

What little I remember from my materials and structures classes tells me pulling at a high angle and with a single attachment would not be as strong and would add forces in ways that would bend things vs pulling directly and with a larger surface area for the forces to be applied. Not saying my way is by any means best but it’s better than a soft shackle around the frame.

I guess I ideally you’d tie the backplates and heavy cross bracing between them into the main frame INLINE with each shackle mount. You’d want to have a tie in that was on both sides of the main frame keep any load from putting too much force on only one side of it. If you pulled from both shackles the cross brace would keep them from squeezing together and the bracing into the frame would give you the strongest attachment points by spreading the loads and forces out evenly. That’s a LOT of extra work though but that’s be a better way of doing it.

There’s always someone that knows more/remembers more so if I am wrong I’ll stand corrected and it won’t hurt my feelings.

I would most definitely NOT run a tree saver or soft shackle around both the front frame uprights. There have been several with taco’d frames that did that, they get pulled together. The soft shackles tend to concentrate forces on a smaller point than a winch mount or even shackle mount will.

I also don’t snatch on my bumper only use a winch it allows me more control and if it were to start to flex or bend I could stop and go about it a different way.

No bubba ropes @joeymt33 !!!!

Appreciate that. I don’t snatch on mine either and had really not thought about the frame rails getting smashed together. I will look at bracing the tabs together next time I have the bumper off

The emp winchmount and I believe the factory winchmount mount between the bumper tubes effectively cross bracing them.... look at my picture above for the EMP. I had the KFI but it pulls at a 45degree angle which is contrary to the EVERY winch manufacturer suggests. I guess you/I could cross brace off the winch mount for the shackle mounts.

Hmmmm May do that after Takeover....

I have the Viper winch mount that mounts between both upright frame rails so I was thinking same thing but was going to look when I had bumper off next time

I like the winch location/setup being on frame behind bumper. Bumper comes off very easy for access. Just wish bumper was stronger

I had the emp mount for the straight pull and it was a pain in the ass.. If you add a 1/2” uhmw bash plate to the bottom of the brush guard you’ll save the bumper a lot!
