Trail Parts and Tools - Input Please

Hey guys,

We have a three state, 1200 mile overland trip planned this summer and like to plan early. Overall the Talon has been great and plan on doing fluids and filter prior to the trip with a test trail ride or two. We will have tools, tire repair etc, but tools might not help if I dont have parts. Help a guy out, what should I grab for a trail side repair or common issue. Right now all suspension is stock, I may upgrade radius rods this spring but not sure. Im in MN so not a ton of rocky aggressive stuff, trail armor is also on the list but haven’t bought yet.

Is swapping an axel, ball joint, etc all a realistic trail repair or are we towing it to pavement.

Packed:
Tire repair kit, plugs, sidewall patch, inflator
Spare tire
Misc tools, sockets, wrenches, breaker bar etc
Misc electrical, fuses, wire, connectors
Recovery gear, rain, gloves, outdoor etc
Tow strap
Fire
Gas
Trauma
Cordless Hole Puncher

Parts????? - Nothing packed - Thinking about buying/getting:
Extra Air Filter
Brake Pads
Shift Motor

What other stuff could break that’s common and a trail repair, camp repair and so on?

You already did the most important thing by buying a Honda.
You can drive yourself nuts deciding where the cutoff point is for Stuff.

My snorkel's Uni pod filter lasts about 600 miles (up to 1000), the stock filter can also last about 600 miles but - 1. Changing the stock filter is a PITA and overly complicated. I can change the Uni in 5 minutes. 2. I can see the pod filter and keep track of it. (I have 3, so 2 spares) There are several snorkel options, one of them is detailed in the New Talon Owners thread, linked below. The other is 10-80 Sports, a very popular choice since introduced. You'll quickly get over the 3" hole you have to cut in a body panel.

If you're riding with others, you can change an axle on the trail (they can winch you over). I tore a boot on my last trip but didn't have a way to lift the thing safely, I was solo, so I came home a bit early. :(

Thanks for the post, I already did the 10-80. So far so good, just need to get a rain cover for it.
How many guys are carrying spare axles and other parts? Thats my main question I guess is was parts should a Talon rider carry that is realistic to what could be done on the trail.

Your list is a good start. On long trips like that I bring 1 set of wheel bearings.1 tie rod. I have a pioneer LE so all the axles are different. If they were all the same I may bring 1 of those with me too. Some tie wraps various sizes, about a 6’ piece of electrical wire.

Talon axles are some of the best available, I've had 3 CVs start clicking which I could have lived with for awhile longer but all 3 of those boots started throwing grease at about the same time which demanded attention. Both the CV and boot get replaced together, I'm not just doing 1/2 the job when I've got everything apart.

If you want to bring axles, you'll need one front and one rear (both sides are the same), a front failure has been rare in Talons, so far.

I don't know if the left and right ball joints are the same (reverse threads?) but that failure is pretty serious, so spares are probably a good idea, something I need to add.

I have 16k miles on my 2021.

This 1200 mile experience - is it easy trail? all rocks ?

At HM, u could ride endless Green and blue trails and I wouldn’t think I needed anything more than tire patch kit and hand tools

I have a HALO - bought it for my future son-in-law - he kinda looked at me confused and dissapointed a bit at such an awful bday present - so I said over your head (have you know how to open a car hood) - so I said give it back - LOL.

they are many out there - I’m sure most work just fine
