As you might've seen, I'm looking at camping trailers for my (future) P1k. Which immediately raises the question of towing capacity. I know the 1k is rated for 2000lbs. Does that include passengers in the 1k? If taking steep terrain is there a smarter limit? I'm not planning month-long treks or anything but I am buying this machine to be a workhorse and I would love to get some feedback on others real life experiences with hauling loads through steep, unfinished roads. Hence the Pioneer, to start finishing them. Any information is good information.

ill be willing to bet if u drive with common sense u could haul 3000 pounds!!! no doubt in my mind at all. now that means if u are riding around and u are going to be going up a good hill u not only put it in low range but u also put it in manual mode so u can keep rpm up at the top of the gear get past the hill and back in high good to go

Thanks Dale. It sure sounds like people are hauling some pretty heavy stuff. Just trying to the weight so I know what else I can haul in the cab in addition to the camper.

I wouldn't worry about any of that 2 much at all unless u will be hitting big hills then use low good thing is these things are geared high so low range with 6 speed u can go pretty fast. u plan on towing long distances or around camp?

Around the ranch and that includes plenty of hills. The trails are somewhat easy on grade but I will want to take it to the ridge line. Also down to some of the creeks. The one I keep looking at is about 1500lbs without provisions. Just worries me a little hauling around something with the same curb weight of the P1k. Just want to make sure the trailer doesn't end up hauling me!

I pulled several hundred whole 40' pine trees. I think I would've screwed the trans or torque converter up if I'd tried to gently pull them.

Took the slack out of the chain and drivetrain, then PULLED them, all tires spinning.

In my towing experience, the limiting factor is typically stopping the load (not pulling it). I would recommend that you experiment with whichever trailer you purchase. Start off on easy hills, and progress to steeper stuff. This way will allow you to experiment in a somewhat controlled environment. As opposed to taking on the steepest hill first thing, only to find that the p1k brakes won't stop the load and now you're about to crash and burn.
Crash and burn

Which is.....
When Your suspension is flattened and your front wheels are off the ground. My enclosed trailer is 2500lbs I wouldn't dream of hitching it up to the pioneer, to much tounge weight. It squats my 2500 truck. But I've pulled my 3500 work van full of tools no problem. I would think 200 lbs would be to much tounge weight especially if your on uneven ground bouncing around

"Front wheels are off the ground" lol. Sorry, I meant does anyone have the hitch weight capacity numbers for the P1k handy?

I seem to recall that the hitch capacity is 200 to 250lb
  • Tongue Weight is usually between 10-13% of overall trailer weight, depending on specific configuration.
  • That's info from one of the manufacturers I've been looking at. At 200lb+ that sounds right in line with the 2000lb towing capacity.

that is correct. knowing that the manufacturer will err on the side of caution (especially Honda), I would imagine the p1k is good for 300lg tongue and 3000lb payload.

coincidentally, my camper is 300lb tongue weight and 3000lb curb weight... but I haven't had a reason to try and tow it with the p1k, yet.
