More from yesterday’s rim riding in the White River NF and BLM near Fravret reservoir. Plus Hubbard Mesa.

Today I decided to take a spin around and through starting at Sunlight Mountain to Carbondale and into the the White River National Forest where I took Co 133 to the quaint little mountain hamlets of Redstone and Marble. One of the early homes in Marble had a date of 1891 over the doorway. I’m told that Marble Colorado gets its name from the stone. Many of our National Monuments are carved from this Marble due to it’s seamlessness and purity. From Marble I drove over McClure Pass and into the Grand Mesa-Uncompahgre-Gunnison National Forest where I eventually saw Paonia which was filled with so many countless orchards of mature fruit trees. After passing through Hotchkiss I picked up Co-92 to Orchard City where I saw only one small orchard...go figure. Traveling then onto Co-65 north into Cedaredge and after passing through, I started picking up in elevation. Moving up towards the Grand Mesa itself. I was getting excited. Earlier in this trip I got up to a little over 9,000’ in Utah up on the edge of the Aquarius Plateau along Hwy 12. So here I go, up, up, and up. I kept checking my elevation on my GPS. I topped off at 10,850’ before heading back down the other side and north passed Powderhorn Ski Resort and back down into the Valley and over to Collbran, then North on 45 1/2 road north in through DeBeque, then back onto I-70 east. That last section on 45.5 road had some amazing geological features and one day I’d love to go back and explore the area. Many times along today’s trip I saw national forest roads that were on my atlas and gps. I seriously considered going up some as a scenic shortcut but, with the possibility of road blockage due to snow and ice seemed a very real possibility and having my trailer in tow only would’ve led to a more difficult experience. So I decided to err on the side of caution and stick to main highways. Even though I had to drive pavement I was rewarded with amazing and spectacular views many of which, had I a place to pull over to photograph, I absolutely would have! Photos are limited but I certainly won’t forget today’s drive through the Colorado backcountry.

The brick ovens are at Redstone. There are about 20 in a row.

I didn’t get to ride the P5 mainly due to snow but I did see some really amazing scenery and tons of riding opportunities for the future.

I drove through a snow storm today on my way to Steamboat Springs. After I left on my way back towards Meeker via Craig on Hwy 13, I drove through a Blizzard. That was an interesting experience. I wasn’t particularly impressed with Steamboat Springs. All along my route north on hwy 131, I kept seeing these yellow signs which stated FM Light and sons est 1905 Best Cowboy Hats, clothes etc. made in USA. When I got into town I decided to go check out some cowboy hats because my old one is kind of worn out. Every hat I picked up in that place said made in China. I also looked at some oiled canvas coats which claim to be Australian made. -Made in China. I left saddened. Also don’t eat at the Big House Burgers. Otherwise it seem like a town could have some interesting character or value besides the ski resort nearby but, most of the camping was either really expensive or in the case of the state park there the only available camping was in the Marina parking lot. Due to snow in the campground. From what I read earlier there are 150 Hot Springs in the area but all I was able to find out were about the two main ones. I would’ve liked to of been there on a Monday also because everything else seemed to be have been closed. Nor did I want to pay for a room in town. Still, It was an interesting drive and I got to check out some more really cool geology of the northwestern area of Colorado. Sorry I didn’t take any pictures but I was concentrating more on driving. I also got a flat tire today from a rock in the road. Nonetheless it was an interesting experience getting to drive in a snowstorm and see the fabled town of Steamboat Hot Springs.
Lots of ice buildup on the vehicles. Now chilling at a friends house in Rifle Colorado. She has feathered flocks .

Went riding today at Fravret Reservoir area just above Rifle Colorado. Went and saw some curious things like prehistoric fish scales, Turtle shell fragments, fossilized bone and tooth enamel. Upon returning to my friends place, the wheel on my trailer about fell off. Apparently I had forgotten to tighten the bolts enough after my last flat tire a couple of days ago. The rim is about worn out one of the bolts sheared off and now I’m going to have to do a whole bunch of work on the trailer as well as buy a new rim for my spare tire. Oh the joys.

I'll bet that you're more careful of your nuts from now on.
That could have been a real problem if you'd have been going at highway speeds.
