Let's talk about prepping.

This is true but if shtf you aren't driving it to moab. You just need a little local transportation. Any old diesel would be preferable to gas because you can make your fuel. Soy, canola, peanut, mustard seed oils will all run a diesel engine.
I don’t disagree with that mindset... but I’ve got horses.

Enough banter....If I were to look for a maintainable bug out vehicle, I would consider the availability of certain fuels after societal collapse. I'd think an older diesel would work because in the older engines, it is possible to use other mixed fuels to get a near enough diesel to run the engine. Back when I had my 1986 CUCV M1008, I'd mix transmission fluid in with my diesel and during summer, you can run a near 60/40 mix of diesel and filtered waste motor oil. A multi fuel engine like in a Deuce and a half would be ideal if you had a way to filter the oil and preferably with a centrifuge

This is the truck you’d want right here in a manual. With the pump system they have you just throw a bigger filter on it and go. I used to dump oil change from itself directly into the tank on fill up just to dispose of it.
Those 6.5 still had glow plugs and crap. Horrible power dependability and transmission sorrows. 5.9 and be done.

I believe what tranny you get in a Comanche is dependent on the year (like a Cherokee or YJ). They did have the AX15 later, I think. Or you could just get the auto.

Commanche your looking at the sr4,sr5. Then they put the ax 5 in the 4 cylinders and the ax15 in the 6 cyl. Not sure what yr they changed them but it was around 84-86 i can tell you that much. The auto is most likely a tf 927 or tf999.

The Peugeot tranny was the turd. Ba10 or something like that.
Never heard of a torqueflite 927 (are you thinking of the 727?). The 900 series are good trannies if you don't put stupid power through them, but just 3 speed. Later ones should have the overdrive auto AW4. Another good transmission.
At this point, I would expect the "bad" drivetrains to have been swapped for something better, but I'm sure there are survivors out there. I think there was even a diesel.

Yeah 727. Not sure why i was thinking 927. It is the ba10 for peugot. Complete trash. Sr4 sr5 t4 ba10 ax5. I wouldnt own any of those trans without a backup. I was surprised the ax 5 isnt nearly as strong as an ax15. But a t176, t177(j10/20), t5, t18 ,999 very dependable trans.

No it is a straight 5 speed, it will run 75 or 80 but it likes about 68 mph, it is great running country roads that are 55 or 60 mph when You come into a small town You can lug it down to 30 or 35 and it will pick right up never have to change gears,,,,,

@JTW but what matters is do you enjoy having horses or is it a forced relationship? You said wifey was pretty easy, so I'm guessing your coming out as an adult male that enjoys owning horses. They have classes for people like that.
Lol.. don’t know any different. Had and been around them since I was a baby.
