The problem with dozens of radios are too many people talking and chatting, makes it difficult for those who just want to listen for real information to do so. As Joey mentioned it might be good for groups to use different frequencies, because if these thing reach out a couple of miles it is going to get very confusing... just sayin'.

My suggestion for anyone going to the Takeover...

Program ALL 14 of these channels into your radio. (Before you get to RRB)

FRS = Family Radio Service
Common Channel,
Frequency (MHz)
1, 462.5625
2, 462.5875
3, 462.6125
4, 462.6375
5, 462.6625
6, 462.6875
7, 462.7125
8, 467.5625
9, 467.5875
10, 467.6125
11, 467.6375
12, 467.6625
13, 467.6875
14, 467.7125

Not that we will use them all at once, but this gives 14 independent / different channels to facilitate each small group to have it's own dedicated channel for that particular ride. Someone in the small group can monitor a MAIN channel (in this case, channel 4 as Hondasxs suggested) for event details / or emergency info.

***If you purchase the typical Hunting / Hiking / Sporting walkie talkie... these channels will already come pre-programmed. In fact, I don't think you can change the frequencies even if you wanted to.
I tested this last night, and found it to be true across 3 wildly different branded walkies. Channel 1 was factory set @ 462.5625 on all three, according to my scanner. All three radios had 14 channels.

Before a small group leaves camp, agree on a radio channel / frequency. Then off you go - Talk all you want.
As long as we leave Channel 4 (462.6375) open for ALL Takeover Event Announcements, we shouldn't have an issue w/ chatter.

Whelp... I went riding with my handheld. Because I've heard other complain of this... You can't hear conversations and drive 20mph at the same time. Just wanted y'all to know that. Powertrain drowns out the handhelds, pretty bad.

Baofeng Throat Microphone Mic Earpiece for CB Radio UV-5R UV-5RE Plus UV-B5 UV-B6 Amazon.com: Baofeng Throat Microphone Mic Earpiece for CB Radio UV-5R UV-5RE Plus UV-B5 UV-B6: Sports & Outdoors

Considered this, but haven't tried it yet, looks too "tacticool". Buddy said it worked at up to 100 on motorcycle. No wind noise and earbud was plenty loud.

Clipping this mic next to your ear or upper cab area helps a great deal. My hearing sucks but his works.

I programmed all the GMRS and FRS channels into mine... I think. So yes, we should be able to talk just fine as long as we all have them in.

My only question for you Hamm guys is what would be suggested for the secenario of.. we're riding in different groups and have a catostophic breakdown and have to call, Jim bob for his special tool to fix our flux capacitor. Will the channels in #12 allow that in the hills and hollers? And how far?

I'm sure that in 1985, plutonium is available in every corner drug store, but in 1955 it's a little hard to come by. Marty, I'm sorry, but I'm afraid you're stuck here!

My radios came w/ some sort of earbud type mic / speaker. It didn't look useful at the time, but I may drag it back out to test it further.
I got that one too - never used it - I like mic speaker the best and use that one the most often - in fact I am at work late tonight and just realize I am net control at 7 - my week

Don't forget that any one can use these frequencies so there is a chance that other riding up there might also be using them

I would plan on selecting maybe 2 or 3 channels (frequencies) that would be used for the main group and then when you break up for rides have another 2 (primary and secondary) that your group picks to stay in touch on the trail. If one is busy with others out side the group talking simply ask if you can broadcast for your group to go to the secondary channel.

Then say at the top and bottom of each hour have someone designated in the riding groups to check the main 2 or 3 bigger group frequencies for traffic or if a Honda has 2 radios they can keep one tuned to the big group frequency.

Wish I could be there.
Me 2 I wish I could be there. :(

Those are some cool helmets - I bet you could play it through your Aux in on your stereo but you would not be able to listen to that and your music at the same time.
