P500 MTX Overhead Audio Pod fits!

So, I found this thing online: Polaris RZR 1000 900 Rear Overhead MTX Dual Speaker Add-on 2879514 | eBay

It is designed to plug into the MTX overhead unit made for the Razr's. I have seen these units in person, and they appear to be the same as the one we are using, just a different shape. They are much harder to find, and much more expensive.

I believe that the Razr unit and the Ace unit have the same rectangular 8 pin output plug, which the "add-on" unit plugs in to - supposedly plug and play. I is pretty much impossible to find compatibility info online, and MTX refuses to acknowledge my inquiries. Since i have a five seater, I thought it would be cool to be able to add two more speakers for the rear passengers.

Anyhow, I pulled the trigger on the Add-on speakers today. Will report back after I receive it.

That would be pretty cool. This thing I bought probably wouldn't wouldn't be the best thing in the 500. There is just so much room in the 1000-5 and two little speakers is enough, but the rear passengers can't hear especially with the mid panel behind the front seats.

Probably a ground issue or they've crossed wiring internally.

@trigger if it were a ground issue wouldn't it do it on bluetooth as well? Kinda weird....and its not engine noise, it's full static like there is no signal.

Hmmm, guess I assumed it was engine noise. Might just be a sh***y receiver? I have an SSV Works overhead unit and the radio reception is terrible as well.

Some of the LED lights out there cause interference. I've seen it happen before. I don't know if it is just cheaper lights or what.

I primarily use the blue-tooth so its not that big of an issue for me, just thought it was odd. I agree @ehart814 it seems like interference.

So I got the add on audio pod today. Got super excited because the plug clicks right into the Ace overhead unit!

Turned radio on and nothing.

So I investigated.

Couple of pins are not present in the output plug that need to connect to wires on the input plug of the add on unit. If u look at the two pics you will see a black wire and a yellow wire and the corresponding empty spots on the output.


So if mtx was nice enough to use yellow for 12v positive and black for ground (like every aftermarket car stereo) then I just need to run a couple wires. Unfortunately I need to buy an extension wire since his will be mounted further back than the wire will reach (they make an extension for 4 seaters)

Something to be said for ease of installation and less connections. Having a ton of components and wiring sounds great until something goes wrong. Tracking down the problem can make it not worth it sometimes.

So has anyone added an antenna to this unit? Radio reception is pretty poor and there is a connection for an external antenna. I can't find an MTX part number. Will it take a standard car audio antenna?
