I am new to the Honda pioneer world, not to sxs or power sports. I apologize if some of this has been posted before. I do not currently have a pioneer but seriously in the market for one. To give a little background here is where I currently am. I am looking to replace a Yamaha rhino I use around the farm and occasional use through the woods and things like that. I have a large group who I snowmobile with, who all have Rzrs and 1 that has a general that go on multiple trips a year to Rush and windrock parks and a few trips to the UP of Michigan. Personally I need something that I can play on but needs to work around the farm also.

Currently I am leaning towards the pioneer 1000-5 vs a Polaris general 4 seater or can am commander, Here are the pros and cons that I have came up with but looking for some help. I am the type of person who shops and shops because I get buyers remorse so want to make sure I am making the right decision. I must say I do have 2 little kids who will ride occasionally and likely more and more as they get older so having extra seats is a must.

Pros
-shorter wheel base than 4 seater
-room for 5 if desired
-more top end speed than current rhino
-Would be able to keep up just fine riding with the other UP north?

Cons
-not as much clearance as Xp General
-buddys all ride polaris so parts and knowledge is available.
-Pioneer doesn't seem as smooth to shift in and out of gear
-no bucket seats
-Assuming the pioneer would be more limited if riding the off road parks?

please feel free to let me know if I am wrong assuming any of these, or missing anything

I would likely remove the rear cage of the P1000 to make the bed more accessible. Also would likely add roof to the front 2 seats, some type of audio and windshield.

Any other "necessary" upgrades I would need to do for the circumstances?

I love my 1000 5 I use it for work and play;) . The shifting will get smoother after the first oil change. I have had mine in some ruff stuff and it handled it really good. I looked at a general but I have always had good luck with honda still have my 1998 foreman and runs great. I have had my pioneer for 2yrs and no problems yet.

Welcome aboard!
Well as far as your pros/cons...
Ure buddies all ride popos so they need the extra parts and belts, your future honda won't 😉, unless its an extreme trail, the pioneer shouldn't be limited in any park (no more then the next stock machine). Bucket seats are nice but the front bench is actually not that bad, I personally prefer it for quick in n out scenarios. And the shifting does get smoother and u also get used to it, not to mention engine brake is incredible! I hardly ever use my brakes. To be honest for utility and recreational use I think its the best out there (but I'm a honda guy 😆) and as far as accesoriess go......ure in the right place, everyone here is real nice amd quick to help out. ( we're also real good at spending ure money) 🤫

Good luck and keep us posted on what u decide, pics!!

Another welcome from The Great Lakes State

that is all you need to know. And they will appreciate every time you have to tow them back to the truck with the reliable (and belt-less) Honda 👍

One of my favorite things about these old "farm rigs" is the look on people's faces when you go through something they struggled with (or didn't even try) in their *insert whatever non-Honda here*. The Pioneers are very capable machines.

Welcome from the Midwest. The choice to spend the amount of money that these machines cost nowadays is not to be taken lightly. The Polaris General is a good machine but it’s going to be like driving a limousine through the woods. The 1.3” of ground clearance will be null and void because of the extra 34.8” of wheel base and keep in mind that the 30” tires are helping achieve this. Also consider this on the GC, I have 12.75” of GC with a Trail Armor skid and 30’s, you will lose another 1/2” of GC when you upgrade your skid. You also have to account for the extra 33.6” of machine length that you will be wheeling through the trails. The General has a weight to power ratio of 0.048/lb while the Pioneers is 0.042/lb, now consider that you don’t really get the full highly touted 100hp because your drivetrain requires a belt system. The Pioneer is far from limited in a trail system, these guys take them places the General would have just as much trouble getting to. Your buddies parts knowledge is based on just that “buying parts”, the Honda is hands down more reliable in my opinion. I can deal with a few small annoyances for the reliability at the very least. In closing, I’m not trying to say that the General isn’t a good machine, but you are literally spending more for less. Here’s a video for you to watch, imagine the General doing this. Take care.

I was contemplating the general as well. I will 90% of the time be using it as a farm vehicle. To me the choice is simple. 600 lbs vs 1000 lbs in the cargo area. And 1500 lbs towing vs 2000 lbs. both in favor of the Pioneer. If your like me, those numbers alone are worth the Pioneer purchase vs the general. Belt vs shaft and reliability of the Honda. I have been doing a lot of comparisons but keep going back to Honda. So that’s what I will be buying.

A couple more great reasons to choose the Honda.

Welcome from the Ozarks! I spent a lot of time in 2018/19 trail riding in West Virginia, with about every different machine you can imagine. Down the highways I had trouble keeping up with the RZRs, generals, X3s due to their ability to run 70+ mph. Highway trips were rare occasions, but on the trail I could do anything in my 1000-5 those machines could. AND I had the biggest cooler! I like the other machines and will probably buy a sport model soon, but I’m really really glad I got the Pioneer first.

Thanks for all the help. I am actually off to the dealers today. I had one question, as I mentioned above I will likely be taking off the rear roll cage to make the bed more accessible. I was wondering if anyone knew if i could do so and then simply add a OEM 2 seater roof? Or if brackets for the rear cage would mess that up?
