Hi,

Yep, I assume that this will only be possible on certain trails and not every trip will I be able to do this. I do agree that there is a good possibility that this will make me slower than the rest of the group.

Until I can get something tested, I won't know the extent of how much this will slow me down. In the end, this might be the deciding factor between getting to go on the group rides and not going.

I in no way want to be the weakest link in the party, but I would sure like a chance to participate. I want to go into this with realistic expectations, so that is why I am going to get some testing out of the way prior to a full commitment on doing a group ride with a trailer in tow.

Thanks,

Rob
I will say this, when we do these overlanding trips, everybody is well looked after, and any circumstances that cause one machine to have to travel slower than the rest always set the pace. It’s a group ride, we leave together and we return together…So you’ll be fine regardless of what you end up doing. We had a SXS with overheating trouble on the last trip and that machine set the pace. That’s just part of it and we’re all out there to enjoy the wonders of cross country riding and enjoying it together as a group…👍 Keep planning and join us…..

Hi Everyone,

In light of the recent Rimrocker trail ride in the went and a few other rides that are planned for next year, I have been interested in pulling a micro overlanding trailer to make these trips more enjoyable for my wife. We can no doubt tent camp, but sleeping on the ground nor a cot is really what she wants to do. I have a P520, so adding a roof top tent is likely out of the question for many reasons: the roof line and lack of space as well as being very tippy.

I know of a few people that have pulled teardrop trailers, and while that would be an easy fix, most of them are either to heavy or poorly constructed for offroad adventures. I am also trying to work within the boundaries of the same width, similar ground clearance and no taller than my machine. That way, if my buggy makes it through the trail, so should my trailer. It also has to have a good suspension for being on trails and terrible roads.

Weight is a huge concern, less is always more when pulling... To that end, I am trying to stay as low a weight as possible. A very good member here, Montecresto enlightened me that trying to pull 1,000 pounds up steep rocky trails might be more than my rig can handle. After thinking about it for a while, I am not sure many of our Honda SXS can be asked to do this. Most will have the power to do it, but will either lack traction or get pushed around by a trailer that weights 2/3rds of what the SXS weighs. To that end, I'm trying to shoot for a fully loaded trailer to come in at 600 ponds, certainly no more than 700.

I have identified a couple of trailers that may work, but of course we have thousands of members that have been doing this a lot longer than I have. There is the Tentrax trailer and the Trail Stomper that I have found as good starting points. Does anyone know of anything else close?

I'm starting to think I may just need to fabricate a trailer out of aluminum and start building the rest from there. Montecresto had a total failure of his teardrop due to lack of adequate suspension that lead to broken seals on the body that let water in to rot the wood construction. So no wood will be used in my build. How many have gone down the road of building a true Overlanding trailer for behind your UTV?

Thanks for your help guys! The Peace Trail ride is a mere 13 or so months away and I want to have this solved long before that ride so I can have time to test prior to a big ride.

Rob
Hello Rob,

I have been building them and have tested mine across the west. I have a peace trail trip scheduled this spring and will be our trailers for the trip. If you want to see what I have built look at

That’s awesome! Wish my wife could manage the ladder and do the tent.
How much actual weight there before gear.
Would you mind going to the fall 2022 AZPT thread after you’ve done it and giving us a review and pointers on it? Thanks…👍

Prior to buying a pioneer, I used to tow a modified 1967 Johnson Furnace military M416 1/4 ton Jeep trailer. It had a folding lockable lid and a rooftop Tent before I got my camper. Then I used it to haul extra gear, my bike and kayak. I would never tow something as heavy as this with my 1000.

Nice trailer but I hate ordering anything from anybody that does not include a phone number on their website

Does anybody sell stub axles and hubs that fit the 4 x136 bolt pattern of P1000 wheels?
Hope you find them and post here when you do. I’ve got a very small trailer that I’m wanting to put SXS wheels/tires on myself. Or even an adapter on my existing hubs….

I was browsing the web tonight and ran across a vendor that would make custom adapters. So conceivably you could use an off the shelf stub axle and 4 bolt hub and the adapter to mount up stock 4x136 wheel. Adapters were about $$110-$170, but then you could use relatively cheap standard stub axles and hubs. Overall cost wouldn’t be too bad.

I didn't have a chance to reply last night, but adapters are likely your only option.

Sure would, hell yeah, aluminum, must be real light….👍
The axle/suspension however would not work for off road overlanding treks….
I worked for a sign company for a few years. Most of our sign cans were made from extruded aluminum. They didn't fair well with movement or abuse. The aluminum tends to rip at the joints. I'd be worried about similar results to montys tear drop.

lol, that’s what happened to my first teardrop, after 6 years and about 2,500 overlanding miles, it broke apart on the Rimrocker. No one was making trailers for off road then. SXS’s and overlanding has grown in popularity since then and I’ve got a quite nice one now….

Thats pretty much my suspension idea. Using my stock rear shocks. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos of people with overland trailers in Australia and that's how they set them up. I'm looking forward to some pics and videos of that thing in action. It looks awesome.

Australia, what a place to try it out in the outback….😎

As you see they loose the straight axle in favor of a very long travel independent suspension. Can’t wait to put it to the test myself…..👍

Wonder if one could use the stock rear a-arms and shocks 🤔 Would just need factory hubs.
