I've decided to quiet P500 a bit more, and since Walker mufflers currently on sale with rebate totaling 5$ shipped by amazon , this is my the cheapest mode so far
1. I've started with looking how to make an elbow to connect additional muffler with OEM.
- three options , and I've used PVC for modelling
a- cut two pipes under sharp angle and weld together - this is very short connector with sharp angle.
I used this way to route new muffler outlet towards ground.
b - bend a tube at local muffler shop for 5$ total , angle not so sharp but with proper cut of the end going to the OEM muffler the mission could be achieved - I could not wait for a custom pipe from amazon so this what I've pursed.
c - get Vibrant (13002) 120° T304 Stainless Steel Mandrel Bend Tube
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GVU7QK/?tag=sxsweb24-20
it will be delivered on Monday, we shall see it if it will work, but should
this set up I think would be more cleanest and proper but pricey
2. The best and smallest muffler that I found was Walker 17897 - 12" long, but 25$ and aluminized steel , vs Walker 22266 - with rebate for 5$ and better quality stainless steel , but 15" long!!!
3. Subjectively there is much of improvement in exhaust sound, much quieter and uniform sound, but on my phone app before 86 db and after 85 db when the engine just idle.
4. I still can hear some popping exhaust sound at the connection with OEM muffler, I think that 1/2" OEM tip too narrow and creates that popping sound and it goes to the connecting elbow.
5. Additional muffler has 1.5" inlet/outlet, no flow restriction or power loss were observed on today's test.
6. I still wear motorcycle ear plugs NoNoise 3PROM0160, but my wife feels now that P500 does not hurt her hearing so much, and indeed it feels better to carry conversation too when driving.
7. You need to buy also two 1 5/8 " exhaust U bolt clamps , one I used to support add on muffler and another to tight the connection with extension pipe.
I've ordered bunch of different pipes and clamps from amazon, so Monday will be GRAND returning day, so my project will be pricey then stated here, but since it was required to test all ideas ,
but now it might be done for about 10$ (5$ muffler after rebate, 5$ bend and expanded on one end 1.5" pipe at local muffler shop ) and beer for my friend with welding machine.
8. If you want to make your new muffler fancy and rust resistant where the welding sutures ,then invest extra 8$ into Rust-Oleum 248904 Automotive 12-Ounce High Heat 2000 Degree Spray Paint also on amazon.com https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CT4AKM/?tag=sxsweb24-20
They have red and yellow paint for those who want to match with the plastic fenders color
I dont have before video yet, but this is how it sounds with new add on muffler:
Also the sound in action :
I think I can hear now fan more clear and how the tranny grinds and valves , I think I'm happy with the result of this project.
9. one more tip, drill a very small drain hole (at the bottom sidewall) in the add on muffler to get rid of condensate, you can see it on the pictures, I did on both ends.
10. the last thing, if video is not convincing , then just borrow at any auto store medium size muffler, wrap around OEM exhaust tip some cloth, to make a seal and attach add on muffler and hear the difference.
