Ok guys I need to buy a brake controller for my class C motor Home. It' a 2017 E450 chassis with 30 foot Freedom Elite box. I have an 18 Ft steel deck tandem axle car hauler.
What you guys using and a little input on pros and cons. Just want to be an educated buyer.
Thanks 20180113 144426

This is what I used in my Tahoe pulling a 30' Gulf Stream Ultralight.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P17NXQ/?tag=sxsweb24-20

I plan to install it in my new tow truck once I find one I like.

Edit: I had brakes on both axles. You didn't mention whether one or both axles have brakes. But it really shouldn't make a difference.

You should be able to get a harness for your chassis as well. complete plug and play. only damage will be the holes you drill for mounting.

My last two Ram pickups had the trailer brake controller integrated. Before that I had an '07 Cummins Ram that I had aTekonsha controller on and I loved it. I had a 38ft. enclosed car trailer that had brakes on all 3 axles and it performed flawlessly.

I put the prodigy 2 on my wife's suv about 4 years ago, works like a charm, very easy to install just plug and play (I ordered the vehicle specific pig tail for it) auto tilt sensor and can be mounted about anywhere, easy to adjust gain and boost. I think it was $100 for pig tail and unit.

Thanks guys for the input. I have decided on Prodigy 3, I checked and all I need is the E450 wire harness(Factory harness is there) and it looks like plug and play!

Its always a good idea to mount them up high where u can see and adjust them easy. Also gives u easy access the the manual lever at bottom. These newer controllers are a lot more forgiving that the old off/on units. I've had to grab the manual lever on the old ones quite a few times. Had bad trailer sway with the p3 a couple of times and had to use the manual lever.

I would go with the factory ford controller and get your camper reflashed to enable it. I love the factory brake control on my F150. The pic below shows the brake control above the driver dash vent. From what I can tell the Ford p/n is 9C2Z-2C006-A but you may want to call a dealer to verify it matches your VIN. This is the best price I see. 2009-2017 Ford Van OEM Dash Trailer Brake Control Module 9C2Z-2C006-A | eBay

I enabled my brake control using the Forscan software and a OBD to USB adapter which was cheaper than a reflash at the dealer.

You might have to search for a dealer to reflash the ones around here will NOT mess with motor homes. Dad has been fighting them just to get his brake lights to work on trailer, they are controlled by the computer on his motor home. Decided to just splice into taillights and make it work the old way.

I looked into the OEM controller, I need to talk to a dealer about flashing the E450. The cutaway chassis doesn't ave any extras in the dash software, only odometer, trip A and B no other options. But thanks for the heads up I'll make some calls

Mine has 7 way plug already installed and I found the OEM brake controller wire harness behind the dash near the location in your photo. That is where I would mount the P3 controller.

Yeah his had the 7pin and they were working but they stopped and the RV dealer pulled the codes and it was ECU error but they couldn’t fix it because they don’t have ability to Program a Ford/Chevy/Dodge computer sent him to Ford dealer, and all the Ford dealers all said they won’t mess with RV chassis at all, take it RV shop. Just a heads up maybe your dealers won’t be a******s

Most trucks now come with brake controllers from the factory, nice clean look and out of the way.

I actually prefer my Prodigy brake controller in my wife's Expedition than my factory brake controller in my truck. I like being able to dial in the boost rate for load weight.
