P1000 Bed Extender

I was looking at some of the scrap around my workshop and found that the cage for an IBC 275 gallon tote is about the perfect width for the tailgate. I cut off the bottom and sides so that it would fit the tailgate. Once cut off I folded the open ends of the tubing then welded them closed. After this was all done I added a bracket to mount to the tailgate stay bolt so that it can flip back in when I don't need an extended bed.

Issue 1: I need a washer and longer bolts on the tailgate stay. When folding up or down the bed extender gets hung up in the tailgate stay cable so I will need to add a spacer when I add the longer bolts.

Issue 2: I need to add some expanded metal around the bed extender to keep contents of the bed from coming out.

This is still a work in progress but the basics are done. Attached are pics of this project.

Before you guys start thinking how star spangled awesome I am I decided to rethink the entire project. The entire assembly bounces while driving. It binds and is cumbersome to install/remove. I may try making something out of sheet metal or expanded metal with a hinged tailgate. The tailgate I may use part of the IBC cage and the sheet metal for the sides. I'll keep you posted as I look into something better.
