I left my front one the way they came
preload controls height, the more accessories/weight the more preload you need to get your full shock travel it is a personal preference.

Just get it out and ride it and make adjustments depending on the feedback you receive. If you want the shocks to be a little bit stiffer, turn the preload down some as that will increase the spring rate. It will also increase the ride height a little bit.

I will often adjust the preload in my shocks depending on amount of passengers or cargo. Recently on a camping trip I turn the rear shocks four rounds of preload. Next time I go on a ride alone, I will take those four rounds back out.
