I finished this today, but not sure I am going to use it. To me it affects the handling at mid to high speeds. Would not bother at all at trail speeds. It is solid and does not affect vision. Maybe if doing a multiple day trip, it would be worth the weight. I have to remove it to load in trailer which is another pain.

It's a jei.. but had to chop it up and make what I need for my application.
Ok thanks, just concerned about sightlines out of rear view mirror which I use a lot traveling with others, not a huge fan of side mirrors, but def need a spare tire where we rock climb in Tennessee

That is a 32" tire. Does not block my rear view. I don't usually use a rear view mirror. I mostly use my side mirrors. You get that way after driving a semi for a few years. Lol

Looks like it will flex front to back if you don’t put another support on it.

I talked with Ian at JEI and he is making an updated version that will allow easier access to the Bed. I asked if he was adding a gas strut or something to make it easier to get in and out and he said he has some plans for something like that... hopefully he will release it soon!

would love to see an aluminum version also!

if remember right, the bolts to hold it on are front to back and sideways it has about 1/4" press on tire to bar. It functions pretty much same as how it was built, just moved where it sets (when I bought, it was designed to go across the rear section of cage above box with same bolt on relationship) Tubing is 3/16" if remember right and I slugged it at ends with solid, so should not flex anyway

Do you know if that JEI carrier would fit a 32” tire?

Yes, it does. I mounted a Tusk Terrabite 32x10-15 on a stock Honda front wheel for my spare and mounted it on the JEI carrier. But I did have to slide/adjust the mounting points to the cage down about an inch in order for the tire to (barely) clear the roof.

I can no longer sneak into my cargo box by partially opening it like I did with a 28" spare, the rack has to be swung open in order to get in or out of the trunk.

Clamps slid down about an inch.

I have the same Honda cargo box and tailgate. Can you slide the mounts done any lower than the 1” you have so far? I have same Terrabites and would like to keep the tire below the roof line if possible...

It can be moved down a few inches more but I have a Hi-Lift jack as well as rear facing lights mounted to the cage so that's as far as I want to lower it. You should be able to get the tire below the roofline from what I can see.

EDIT: I was only thinking about it from the drivers side. I went to the garage to look at it and realized the flag mount on the passenger side will be in the way of sliding it down any further. Not sure if it can clamp below that.

I’m thinking I can trim that flag mount some to move down more... is it easy to swing the mount up with the tire mounted to access the box? I’m thinking of adding a gas strut somehow to help open and close if it’s heavy.

Good idea on the gas strut, I was going to ask if a guy could make a kickstand type thing to hold the tire up at a 45* angle. Swinging that weight all the way 'open' would be a handful for me.

That flag mount was in use but now that I had to slide the spare carrier down I cant use it anymore. I ordered a 2" vertical flag mount so I can use a flag on the other side. Now I don't have to remove the flag when I want to get in the trunk.

It's a bit of a struggle for me to swing the rack up to get into the trunk, but I can do it solo. It is heavy and I'm not sure I'd be able to do it if I didn't relocate the RotoPax mount to the bed extender. The spare weighs over 50 pounds and the 2 gallon RotoPax is 18 pounds full.

My crude kickstand held in place.

I cut down an old broomstick to hold the tire in place when I'm solo. Not the best solution but it will have to do for now.

I'm seriously considering the Dirt Road Fabrication bed extender with spare tire mount option to replace my JEI spare carrier. Dirt Road Fab has mentioned that the Dragon Fire hitch receiver will work with his bed extender/spare mount but there it a fitment issue with his set up on the 2 seater Talons. Once he has that worked out I'm likely going that route, it's a much better solution for me to be able to access my trunk.

Here's the Dirt Road Fab extender (photo credit to Dirt Road Fab)

I’m thinking a heavy duty gas strut would work, Mount one end to the factory flag mount tab and the other on the lower section of the spare tire mount to hold it open...
