P1000 Trailer tie down

After watching the two Shock Therapy videos I've changed my tie down system (shown in post 52) to this (from another thread) -

Having watched the 2 Shock Therapy videos in post #27, I've changed my tie down system. Before, tied high on the chassis because I didn't want to tie to the suspension, the bumper seemed more stout to me. Tying as high as possible on the trailer lessened suspension compression but it did pull...

I installed a Hillbilly brake and lock the brakes with it when hauling my P1000-3 on a trailer.

Using the Hillbilly brake should perhaps come with a caveat that is often taught in pilot ground school (small aircraft have similar "parking brakes" that use a hydraulic lock valve to keep brake pressure applied). The problem can occur when parking for longer periods, or at least long enough for the ambient temperature to increase a fair amount (think warming up in the sun). This can have the hydraulic fluid expanding with the potential for over pressurizing the brake system and causing damage.

Disclaimer: I have no clue if this concern is transferrable to my Honda, but I guess it was beat into my noggin long ago, so I heed it.

I use Harbor Freight tire straps on my talon and they work great. For my 2 Aces, I strap the lower a-arms front and back in an X pattern under the bike. They DO NOT move!

Everyone says this, but I've yet to see it happen. I tow to Montana and South Dakota yearly without any issues. Might be because I use the bigger 3000lb rated heavy straps and don't off-road the trailer at 45mph

You've never trailered through Louisiana! It's off road at 70 mph!

Put down my e-tracks a couple weekends ago. Used four 8' powder coated rails. Had to shave off about .5" off of one from each side.

Through bolted with grade 8 hardware through the boards as well as the steel crossmembers. I'm pretty sure I'll get the rated break strength of the tracks before they pull out of the trailer.

Also got my straps in last week. Had them custom make the tire bonnets and just put the etrack clip on the end intead of the hook. I'm sure that limits my portability of using the straps elsewhere. But it sure makes it easy on this trailer.

Now I just need to find time to take it out to ride...

Nice set up. What is the measurement on the e-track on center? Don’t have my P1K5 yet and want to get my trailer set up for when I get the call it’s ready.

Hey Mike, thanks. Sorry, haven’t had the trailer at the house and forgot to check last time at the hunting camp. The tracks are 49” inside to inside and 54” center to center.

Here is what the owners manual says. They state to put it in park and lock 4 wheel in or i 4 wheel. Also, tie down and snug it down.

I would not attach tie-down straps to the bumpers or frame except possibly for short distance trailering. The buggy will "bounce" on its suspension causing the straps to work loose.

Most owners attach tie-down straps to the suspension arms close to the wheel ends.

I had to drop in on this thread to see if I had missed anything. My contribution to the thread was #38 from 2020. My set up has over 2000 miles on it traveling both freeways and dirt road pot holes. Still solid and safe.
My two favorite takeaways from this thread.
1 - We secure our toys to keep them from becoming projectiles of mass destruction during the unthinkable.
2 - We have all shuddered driving down the freeway at speed observing a guy towing a $20,000 + toy on a $500 trailer tied down with $15 Harbor Frieght straps. LOL

Most straps but not all. I agree that there are better methods, I use chocked tire straps on the front myself. Just for safety I always throw a couple ratchet straps on the rear tied to the trailer hitch. I'd occasionally find one of them had loosened up until I got a set of G3 Cargo Buckles that @TxDoc posted. Used them all last season and never had a loose strap. Any slack just makes them tighter.

The Cargo Buckles design doesn't allow any slack to persist. They self-tighten if any slack is introduced. I've never found any slack in any one of mine.

I cant imagine ever going back to ratchet straps. Been using this system for years on different ATVs and the Pioneer without issue. Some folks put on all 4 wheels for added security, but this works great as it sits. Incredibly easy on and off and the mule dont move an inch.

I also have the Erickson 09160 for my 1K5. I went with two sets (4 wheels), because one set is rated for 1500 lbs, and the 1K5 is 1700 lbs. (stock). I agree that this is a fantastic and easy setup.
