I’ve always wanted to get into that.. but this is the place to metal detect.. this is my folks place where I grew up. It was a local gathering spot years ago before we bought it. People would come from miles around 100 years ago to picnic and socialize here. Then the lake was built 50 years ago and it was a hot spot for partying. Mom and Dad bought this farm 35 years ago and it’s been offlimits since. We’ve found lots of Indian artifacts over the years too... it was an epicenter for Indian culture.

Orchardizing by the Weary Farmer...Over the past two days I got 435 tree saplings potted in preparation for planting at a later date. Then later this afternoon I received my shipment of an additional 500 trees, shrubs and vines, which are all fruit and nut yielding. Plus they're all high in antioxidants and cancer fighting properties. I also started planting seeds for the garden. Busy days....Yes, trees do come in boxes. Especially when shipped from Washington state.

Awesome, dry root trees make the best. Far less loss than container trees from the box stores.

For my fire suppression trailer I plan on building, I scored this hose reel from the local surplus store for $50 . It needs some cleaning, a new chain and probably a new electric motor or hand crank to wind it up. It does fit my 1.5” hose diameter though. I also already have 250’ of fire hose.

Besides growing your own food and having a large heirloom seed bank, It's good to put away some freeze dried meals.
These are some of the companies I've purchased FD foods from in the past. Some come in pouches and some in #10 cans. Only just recently I went into an REI and other camping stores to discover there are a few more companies to add to the mix.

It's typically gonna be cheaper ordering through the manufacturers themselves but check prices. Another great store for bulk food purchases in the west are the Winco stores.
When purchasing flour always remember the shelf life for ground flour is only about 2-3 years if stored properly. The shelf life for unground Wheat berries(flour) is 25-30 years stored in optimal conditions. A flour mill can be found for anywhere from $50-$1200

I was all prepped up for it in 99’ and never quit, lol. It’s a prudent way to live, I find enjoyment in the self sustainability anyway.

I picked up 5 new books at the Mother Earth News Expo this weekend along with some bottles of Pure Elderberry syrup. There were a lot of cool vendors there but much of it was overpriced stuff. As far as books are concerned, in the event of some type of calamity, there may not be power or internet or extreme limited access. I appreciate having a hard copy of helpful information. My library is constantly growing. I also bought 3 Arkansas Black Apple trees and another variety of Gooseberry I didn't already have.
