So I’ve been kicking around the idea of a talon x4 for a bit.

Finally pulled the trigger on a rebuilder. Found one that was laid on its side that appears to be workable. Odometer shows less than 900 miles and it’s a 2020. Wanted something a bit newer but it was hard to pass on the price.

Not my first rebuilder ( mostly cars and trucks) but my first rebuilder toy.

Should be a good project for my side business to make parts for etc.

Hopefully I’ll see it in a week or so to see what is really going on with it.

Thanks!

It doesn’t look like it’s taken a ton of abuse, just one hold my beer event it looks like.

Pass pillars need a little tug with the B pillar being the worst.

The hour meter shows 70 hours..that seems a bit high for only 800 miles on the odometer…PO must’ve put putted a lot.

Finally on my surgery (butcher lol) table.

The bottom sits straight to my lift which is a great starting point. For my purposes my lift table is straight enough of a reference point.

No major war wounds on the underside

I’m going to have to straighten or replace the left trailing arm and lower radius rod. It took a pretty darn good smack it looks like..

Going to strip off the cage starting tomorrow night. Then I’ll give it a good wash with my hot water pressure washer.

Drivers rear, is toed in quite a bit.

The cheaper plastic parts are pretty sun faded and the same for the exposed painted parts ….it’s easy to see under the plastics. I’m just going to take a frame part off and take it down to the paint shop and just get it as close as I can, spray the color and a few layers of clear and call it a day.
The rear trailing arms on the X bend pretty easily right where it angles out to the wheel. At least that’s where we have bent it. The were some companies that make a decent high clearance and stronger if you want to go that route. I think you got a previous machine overall there! Congrats.

thanks for the tip. Im going to drop both rear wheels and get my measurements off the other arm and press it back in alignment and box it for now.

I gotta get my cnc plasma table finished yet, but will make some plates with it is my plan.

That will work! I have seen a few online done that way and if I had the skills that’s what we would have done too!)

I took off the bent radius rod and painted it with Allis Chalmers orange I had left over from a restoration I did several years ago.

For me it’s close enough and it’s super cheap too. Out in the dirt / sun I doubt it will be noticeable.

Whey off, no whey you'll be able to sleep at night knowing it doesn't match that well.........you should just sell that JAH to someone really far from you so you never have to see how bad it looks again......🤔 Maybe to someone far like in ......... Florida? 🤷‍♂️

Yeah it’s a bit off the AC orange needs a touch more red.…but it’s also $50 a gallon vs $650 a gallon and I can find it at any farm ranch store.

On the Rops connecting points, I’ll just mask them off and spray them too so it won’t stand out so much.

Probably do two coats of color and 3-4 of clear on the red Rops i will be using.

Got both arms off and set on my welding table. Set a couple angles so I could compare the good and bad arm.

As you suggested, the drivers arm has about 1” of bend on it and a slight twist.

Going to try and heat it up a bit and straighten it out. I have some 2” angle that I think will work nicely as new gussets…I’ll do both while I have them off if I can get the arm pushed back.

A bit of heat and some pressure I got it back to shape.

I have some 2” angle scrap that should make a really nice gusset. It’s 10” long 1/8” wall.

Not my best work but they will go back on in the morning.

Something in the powder coating or surface treatment really made it hard to weld cleanly no matter what I tried it spattered like crazy…but I goobered enough on to make it work…I’ve never been accused of being a great welder…I’m a hell of a grinder however 🤣.

Got the rear end squared away with the arms I straightened out. Took it for a spin and it for sure tracks better. It looks like both rears are toed in slightly….I believe this is normal for this type of suspension as power applied makes the rear toe out a bit…just what i remember from college mini Indy days…🤷‍♂️

IMG 6348
IMG 6347

So I pressure washed the buggy with the rear suspension fixed. I then pulled the old Rops and test fit the new takeoff I picked up last week.

IMG 6350

Much to my surprise, the front section fit perfectly, then the middle…and the rear as well! I was stunned as I thought I’d be beating the crap outta it.

Mrs Vikes79 thinks I should leave the Rops red and call the buggy Stepchild….
