Rock Maple is furniture not fire wood!! Same for walnut and cherry!!! There should be a law or at least a sin...repent you sinner!!
My neighbor in Cape Breton cut the woods around me and left a lot of big Rock Maple standing. Until we had that 158 mph wind storm a couple years ago in the fall. It knocked most down. Just pulled the roots right out because now they were exposed. We cut about 5 cords and there are probably another 15 cords knocked over. It’s good because it’s mostly off the ground because of the roots and branches. Just drying. One thing about Rock Maple, it will last for years even on the ground.

When I was a kid, I worked in a furniture store that sold Tel City furniture made from Hard Rock Maple, it was beautiful and high quality furniture. Even being only 16 I could tell it was very nice.

Just think how long it would last as furniture.

Maybe 20 years ago I bought a Hard Rock Maple rifle stock blank for a $100. I was going to put a pre 64 Model 70 Winchester in 270 Winchester into the stock. Before I got around to doing it a fellow offered me an obscene amount of money for the rifle and I sold it. Sold the stock a couple years back for $600 as part of deal on a Smith 41...sorry I did the deal now but it was inlet for the long action Model 70 and I don't have one that deserves that stock. At least the stock didn't go in the fire place.

There is a lot of big Rock Maple laying down waiting to be cut up. Haha. Probably at least 20” to 2’ at the butt. It’s damn heavy to move around that big. And I’m sure your rifle stock would have burned nice too. Haha
Oh and Moonshiners and Moonshiners : Smoke Ring is on tonight on Discovery. Pulled pork throw down tonight. Yum

We have a lot of Bald Eagles around here. This time of year st the causeway they go after the Herring. They will pluck them from the water, transfer it to the female, going upside down, then she tries the same thing with the young ones. Very cool to watch. In the Annapolis valley in Sheffield mills , the chicken farmers put the dead chickens out in the field for the eagles. Sometimes there are over 100 Eagles around in the trees. Crazy.

A buddy of mine, years ago, was clearing his lot for boards to build his house, and called me asking if I knew what Birdseye Maple looked like. I said it looks like it’s got a disease and all little narls all over it.
It was a big straight tree. I told him to call a big mill around here. The old guy came out and said he’d give him $5,000 cash and he’d cut it and haul it. Nice

It’s been below freezing every d for over a week. I’ve had a fire in the garage every night since.
I spent the day cleaning the garage. Two big garbage bags full. So far.

A bunch of metal , an older guy picked up and was very thankful. I have a bunch of stuff that I don’t want anymore but it’s too good to throw out.
I put a bunch of screws and bolts, washers, and machine screws, metric and standard. A building supply store went out of business by me and they put all their screws and nuts and bolts on for 90% off. I couldn’t help myself. I spent some time tonight putting everything in three parts cabinets. Haha. I got everything I thought I might need or use sometime.
The garage actually looks a little clean in there. I can actually walk around the bike.

Yeah I would never cut up Birdseye. It does make some very pretty furniture. Fiddle makers all over the world want Birdseye. I have a friend here in town that had a drying kiln for drying hardwood. And some pine. One time he had so much Birdseye he actually put some of the boards in his kids treehouse. Even I thought he was crazy. Haha

Thanks!!

I cleaned off a bench and my table saw over the weekend so I could walk to the refrig without going around the saw...out of habit I walked around the saw this morning...you'd think I'd remember why I cleaned it up. Why was that again?

Hard to tell but there are 3 bucks together in this one. It’s a picture off a video.

Healthy boys...good breeding stock. Over a 15 year period we shot only "cull" males and let the nice bucks carry the herd. We saw a big drop in "bad horn blood" and better bucks seemed to be able to dominate the does. It seems to be worth doing. This was in soy bean country and we did a lot of herd reduction efforts too and the "good bucks" stayed out of the fields so they survived to enhance the herd. I believe the good genes made them smarter too. BTW, "bad horn bucks" taste good too

Well, exactly except for a little while anyway I do pretty good about putting each tool and supplies back where they belong. But yeah, eventually….🙄
