Healthy boys...good breeding stock. Over a 15 year period we shot only "cull" males and let the nice bucks carry the herd. We saw a big drop in "bad horn blood" and better bucks seemed to be able to dominate the does. It seems to be worth doing. This was in soy bean country and we did a lot of herd reduction efforts too and the "good bucks" stayed out of the fields so they survived to enhance the herd. I believe the good genes made them smarter too. BTW, "bad horn bucks" taste good too
Iā€™ve seen big body deer around the camp. I saw a 14 pointer with long tines, I walked right up on him. I put doe piss on his scrape two days before. It was snowing hard. He was laying right across from the scrape. About 5 feet. He jumped up and stood in the trail. He was definitely rutting. He didnā€™t have much of an ass. But his head was above the branches I cut off at 6ā€™. I knelt now as he was turning his head. Big boy. I actually whispers, anyone but me, youā€™d be dead right now for your head. Then he took three steps towards me. About 10 feet away. I said one more step and Iā€™m shooting you. He took a step and I flicked the safety off and he knew that sound. Gone.
Nice just seeing those big guys. Iā€™ve see a few bigger than him, too.

light dusting of snow this morning but it will be gone this afternoon since we're headed to the upper 40's and 50's tomorrow.

An honorable Veterans Day to everyone!!
My brother said it snowed a little this morning at the camp too. Itā€™s about 38 degrees down there today and rain. I told him they would be coming to the apples this afternoon. Go early and sit in the tree stand,

Been having some really fine fall weather here. In the meantime I had quite a little incident here at the lake house which is surrounded by a lot of forest.

Apparently there was water getting into the chimney chase and rotting a few boards which wasnā€™t manifest until the moment a large chunk fell off a few weeks ago. Before I could get it repaired, I was setting one morning, just before daylight having coffee in front of the fireplace and I heard noise inside the chimney chase which I immediately recognized as an animal, and definitely a nocturnal animal obviously headed into a cozy place to sleep after galavanting all night. What was it, possum, skunk, coonā€¦ā€¦šŸ¤”

a day or two latter I was waking up one morning and I heard an awful racket upstairs so I went up, opened the closet in one of the bedrooms and then in the back of the closet was a small about 4ā€™ tall door providing access to the attic which I opened and with flashlight could see out towards the eve banging around in the trusses, insulation and wiring, the head of a raccoonā€¦.šŸ˜”

Thatā€™s when I said thatā€™s it, youā€™re going to die tonight.

So I went about working all day on my deck until about a half hour before dark and then I got a chair, a cold beer and nickel back, the nick name for my small pump shotgunā€¦and I sat and waited for him to emerge. When at last he did poke his head out, there was TWOā€¦.šŸ˜³

But they were very hesitant, they could smell or sense my presence though I was somewhat concealed. Finall one stuck his head out far enough for me to fire and not pepper the chimney chase just catching his protruding head and he dropped. The second one of course pulled back in. But within only moments, he emerged and I fired on him too. Only unfortunately he fell back inside the chase. No big deal, Iā€™d get it in the morning light.

well, next morning I climbed the latter and behold there was no floor (fire block) as required by code so the b**** fell all the way to the bottom, I thought/hoped, but couldnā€™t see him. If he was down there he was on the far side of the firebox out of sight. If not, he fell back into an inaccessible part space between the two floors where heā€™d rot and smell my house up for months or longerā€¦ā€¦šŸ˜³

So I went down and cut a one square foot hole on the far side of the firebox down low and thankfully there he lie and I retrieved himā€¦

I think you mentioned you use to be a roofer so youā€™ll recognize the area where the roof meets the chimney chase as a typically problematic area, especially if the roofer isnā€™t using care and diligence. Iā€™ll have to redo that when I replace the rotted woodā€¦.

Is there any flashing from the roof to the chimney. We arenā€™t allowed by code to cover our chimney.
