The 243 I use out west has the exact same bolt and safety as my 30.06 here. So it feels like an old friend. Just doesn’t want to knock your shoulder off. HahaMy Ruger 243 is my go to gun, shoots flat.

An old guy that’s a gunsmith and has a little store in his basement, had a few boxes last time I was there.I don't hunt anymore either but always wanted a lever gun. they just happened to have 1 in the shop so I grabbed it. took 3 months to find ammo for it.View attachment 315294
That's BS, you ever seen a bear in the woods trying to get some where, I have and your not going to out run them for a hundred yards, much less a half a mile.A few days later Private Bratton narrowly escaped after being chased half a mile by a bear he had wounded through the lungs. Lewis sent a party in pursuit, which found the bear “perfectly alive.” They finally killed it with two shots to the skull. By this time, Lewis’s bravado had all but disappeared. “This bear being so hard to die reather intimedates us all; I must confess that I do not like the gentlemen and had reather fight two Indians than one bear; there is no other chance to conquer them by a single shot but by shooting them through the brains…
That bear was wounded, shot through the lung with a 50 caliber ball, and private Britton narrowly made it to the other men who drew fire on it….😉That's BS, you ever seen a bear in the woods trying to get some where, I have and your not going to out run them for a hundred yards, much less a half a mile.

Yup, hard to believe. Less than 200 years ago. But if I was a native back then, I’d probably be pissed off too that these white guys were on my land and killing my fur animals.
Yeah, exactly…..Yup, hard to believe. Less than 200 years ago. But if I was a native back then, I’d probably be pissed off too that these white guys were on my land and killing my fur animals.

Yeah, things moved rather quickly. This group of trappers had called upon the British HBC (Hudson Bay Company) not weeks before that Indian encounter to dispose of furs they had been collecting at their fort on the Columbia below Kettle Falls. The commander had to dispatch a runner to Ft Vancouver for cash to purchase the furs which took 3 days. In the meantime he hosted the trappers, treating them to 5 gallons of port wine. During this time, the head trapper, one Bill Williams gave detailed history and information of the country and informed the commander that in less than 50 years time the territory would be well being settled by Americans and the British would have to withdraw their forts to north of the 49th parallel. This was 1843……Yup, hard to believe. Less than 200 years ago. But if I was a native back then, I’d probably be pissed off too that these white guys were on my land and killing my fur animals.

Damn Brits gave in to easily. 😊Yeah, things moved rather quickly. In fact, in 1846 the Oregon treaty (for all the country that comprises Washington state and Oregon state today, was then known as Oregon territory) was signed between the US and Britain which extended US territory to the Pacific Ocean up to the 49th parallel and required the British to remove their Ft to Vancouver island….
